Porcelain Veneers vs. Dental Bonding: Which Is Right for You?

Reviewed by Dr. Charles Smurthwaite, DDS, MS ·

How they differ

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain made to your design and bonded to the front of teeth. Bonding is composite resin sculpted directly onto the tooth in one visit.

Porcelain reflects light like natural enamel and resists staining. Composite looks great too but can pick up stains and wear faster.

When bonding makes sense

A single chipped edge, a small gap or a slightly short tooth are ideal for bonding. It’s conservative, affordable and usually requires no numbing.

When veneers are the better investment

If you want to change the color, shape and alignment of several teeth at once — a true smile makeover — veneers deliver a more durable, cohesive result.

Dr. Smurthwaite plans veneers with a digital preview so you can see your new smile before treatment begins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I whiten veneers or bonding?

No — whitening only affects natural enamel. Whiten first, then match your cosmetic work to the new shade.
